Product Care Guide

RW Collective product care materials

Thoughtful care helps preserve the beauty, character, and performance of your furniture for years to come. Explore our general recommendations for caring for the materials throughout your home.

Beautiful materials deserve thoughtful care.

Furniture is meant to be lived with. Many of the materials used throughout our collections are naturally occurring or individually finished, so subtle differences in color, grain, texture, markings, and surface character should be expected. These variations are part of what gives each piece its individuality.

The recommendations below are intended as a general guide. Whenever care instructions or a cleaning code are provided for your specific product, those directions should always take priority.

01

Begin with the product.

Review the product details, material information, and any cleaning code associated with your piece before beginning.

Natural materials and specialty finishes may require care that differs from standard furniture surfaces.

02

Test before treating.

When introducing any cleaning product, begin in a small, inconspicuous area to confirm that it will not affect the material, color, or finish.

Avoid aggressive chemicals, abrasive pads, bleach, ammonia, vinegar, citrus-based cleaners, disinfecting wipes, or products not specifically intended for the surface being cleaned.

03

Respond quickly.

Attend to spills as soon as possible rather than allowing moisture or residue to remain on the surface.

Regular dusting and routine maintenance will help reduce buildup and keep finishes looking their best.

04

Protect the environment around it.

Whenever possible, protect furniture from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and extreme heat.

Everyday preventative care can make a meaningful difference in the long-term appearance of a piece.

Essential Care Highlights

A concise overview of everyday care recommendations. For complete care details, select your material above.

01 / Material Care

Upholstery

Fabric sofas, chairs, sectionals, ottomans, and upholstered furnishings.

Consistent light maintenance helps upholstered pieces retain their appearance while reducing everyday dust and debris.

  • Vacuum upholstery weekly using an appropriate upholstery attachment.
  • Rotate or reposition removable cushions regularly to encourage more even wear.
  • When spills occur, blot the area rather than rubbing it into the fabric.
  • Always follow the cleaning code or care instructions assigned to the specific fabric on your piece.
Important: Fabric-specific cleaning instructions should always take priority over general upholstery care.
02 / Material Care

Solid Wood

Natural and finished wood surfaces.

Wood responds to its surroundings, making simple preventative care especially valuable for preserving its finish and natural character.

  • Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth.
  • When additional cleaning is needed, use mild soap with water rather than harsh household cleaners.
  • Do not allow moisture to remain on the surface. Dry the piece promptly after cleaning or spills.
  • Use coasters, placemats, and trivets beneath beverages, tableware, and hot objects.
03 / Material Care

Leather & Suede

Leather, suede, nubuck, and related natural surfaces.

Leather and suede require a gentler approach than many other furniture surfaces. Care should be tailored to the exact material.

  • For leather, remove surface dust using a soft white cloth.
  • Blot spills promptly rather than allowing liquid to remain on the leather.
  • Avoid standard household cleaning products on leather.
  • Protect leather pieces from prolonged direct sunlight.
  • For suede and nubuck, use only products specifically designed for suede or nubuck care.
  • Avoid introducing water to suede or nubuck unless the material's specific care instructions approve its use.
04 / Material Care

Marble & Natural Stone

Marble and other natural stone furniture surfaces.

Natural stone is prized for its distinctive markings and variation. Protecting the surface from incompatible cleaners and prolonged exposure to spills is essential.

  • Choose a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for natural stone.
  • Wipe up spills promptly to minimize prolonged contact with the surface.
  • Avoid acidic cleaning products.
  • Do not use bleach on marble or natural stone.
  • Protect the surface from excessive heat.
05 / Material Care

Metal & Cast Iron

Cast iron and related metal furniture surfaces.

Keeping metal surfaces clean and thoroughly dry helps protect their finish and reduces the potential for corrosion.

  • Clean cast iron using mild soap and water.
  • Rinse away any remaining cleaning residue.
  • Dry the surface completely after cleaning.
  • If rust begins to appear, address it promptly rather than allowing it to progress.
06 / Material Care

Bone & Decorative Inlay

Bone inlay and other specialty decorative inlay surfaces.

Intricate inlay work benefits from delicate cleaning and protection from environmental extremes.

  • Remove dust gently to avoid unnecessary abrasion.
  • When cleaning is necessary, use a light application of mild soap.
  • Avoid excessive moisture.
  • Protect decorative inlay from excessive heat.
  • Limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Do not use harsh cleaning chemicals.
07 / Material Care

Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor frames and furniture surfaces.

Routine cleaning helps remove surface buildup and maintain the appearance of outdoor furnishings.

  • Wash frames and appropriate outdoor surfaces using mild soap and water.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove cleaning residue.
  • Allow surfaces to dry completely after cleaning.

Gentle care is almost always the best place to begin.

Avoid abrasive tools and aggressive household chemicals, including bleach, ammonia, vinegar, citrus-based cleaners, disinfecting wipes, and products that are not intended for the material you are treating. When in doubt, test a product in a discreet area before applying it to a visible surface.

Some care is best left to a professional.

Deep or stubborn staining, heat marks, cloudy or compromised finishes, significant scratches, cracks, leather damage, difficult upholstery stains, rust repair, and specialty materials may require professional attention.

A qualified furniture repair specialist, upholstery professional, or material-care expert can help address these concerns while reducing the likelihood of causing additional damage to the piece.
